The greatest of all the publishing events in the world, the Frankfurt Book Fair, is around the corner. Running from October 10 to 14 this year at its usual venue, the Frankfurt Trade Fair grounds in Frankfurt, Germany, this event is the largest gathering of writing and publishing professionals in the world. Several thousand exhibitors representing book publishing, multimedia, and technology companies, as well as content providers from all over the world, gather in order to negotiate international publishing rights and license fees.
More than 7,300 exhibitors from over 100 countries and about 286425 visitors took part in the 2017 edition of the fair. The fair, which saw 4000 events take place in 2017, opens its gates for the general public in the final two days. The history of the fair dates back 500 years, when it was first held in 1454 after Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. The modern version of the event is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2018. The 70th Frankfurter Buchmesse will be attended by the Federal President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on Wednesday, 10 Oct. The Federal President will speak with Croatian author Ivana Sajko, the recipient of this year’s International Literature Award – Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and Belgian writer Stefan Hertmans of the War and Turpentine fame, on the topic “On Opining. How to Defend Freedom in Turbulent Times”
Georgia, the Eastern European nation, is the Guest of Honour at FBF 2018; its richly diverse culture and literature will be showcased at the fair. Frankfurter Buchmesse is also the most important annual event for the digital content business and the edtech industry. With the rapid digitization of content and tech-enhanced publishing workflows, technology has become an intrinsic part of modern publishing.
